Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia):

Our Speech Therapy services include evaluations, treatment and consultations for individuals presenting with a swallowing problem known as dysphagia. Often, a one-time consultation may be enough to help the patient and/or caregivers to learn how to safely manage the swallowing difficulty. We provide the education and answer the questions you are often seeking. Our Speech Language Pathologists specialize in this highly skilled area known as dysphagia treatment.

Consider contacting a Speech-Language Pathologist for a swallowing evaluation if you notice:

  • Choking on foods, liquids or medications
  • Excessive throat clearing
  • Wet, gurgly voice
  • Cannot or will not chew
  • Excessive chewing
  • Pockets food in cheek
  • Poor lip closure
  • Eats too fast or too slow
  • Recurrent pneumonia
  • Non-oral feedings
  • Increased mucus, phlegm

To faciliate safe swallowing with your loved one suffering from dementia:

  1. Talk to them. Let them know you are about to give them something to eat.
  2. Be sure they are sitting at a 90 degree upright position.  After eating, keep them upright for thirty minutes.
  3. Use a soft voice and a soft touch.
  4. Use a teaspoon only.
  5. Watch that the food has been completely swallowed before providing an additional bite.

Monitor for coughing or increased chest breathing.  If you notice either of these contact us so we can arrange a swallowing evaluation with recommendations to follow. We are there to educate you and help you to understand what is happening.

Our NY based speech therapy services provide clinical evaluations and provide traditional swallowing therapy as well as a full course of Vital-Stim Therapy (; a state of the art neuromuscular electrical stimulation used to improve the swallowing mechanism.
